Slam Finalists: 2012

There were many, many outstanding performances in all three classes, and choosing three top finishers in some classes proved extremely difficult. I want to encourage all of you to consider participating during Open Mic. Great job!

It's that time again!
Once the regular season ends, the SummerSlams begin. What are SummerSlams? Come see for yourself: they're a perfect time to get involved for the first time, plus offer a great chance to try out new material. May's slam features a workshop by the TYPS' own Sarah Gonzales!

FRESHMAN ENGLISH HOMEWORK  

 

For Wednesday and Thursday, May 16-17

Bring whatever materials you need to work productively on your Inferno game.

 

For Friday, May 18

Finish creating your  Inferno game. Bring it to class on Friday.

 

JUNIOR AP HOMEWORK/ANNOUNCEMENTS: 

 POETRY SLAMS:

  1. Semi-final rounds in individual English classes on Thursday and Friday, May 17-18. Everyone must perform at least one poem during this round, either as an individual or with two-four other students. Extra credit points available if you perform a second poem.
  2. Top two performers from the semi-finals advance to the finals in the Auditorium on Monday, May 21.

PROMPTS TO HELP YOU GENERATE IDEAS FOR YOUR POEM(S):

Write for 10 minutes, uninterrupted; do not edit for grammar, syntax, or conventions. "First thought; best thought."--Allen Ginsberg

 

1) A continuation of what you began writing during our workshop in April:

·"I am not who you think I am..."

·"You think I am a _______ , but really I am a _____." (metaphor)

 

2) A response to one of the slam pieces you have heard/watched.

 

3) A letter you would like to write or a conversation you would like to have with an important figure in our society (the President, a famous religious leader, a cultural icon, etc.)

 

4) A rant about a political, social, educational, or ecological issue about which you'd like to speak your mind

 

5) A description of and/or reflection on an "exploded moment": a short event or conversation that later took on much greater significance.

 

6) A reinterpretation of some moment or issue from a vastly different perspective from your own (adopt a persona).
